Merry Christmas! Mallett 2018 Christmas Card

December 25, 2018
2018 Christmas Card (7 of 9).jpg

Merry Christmas everyone! Hope your holiday has been wonderful. We are enjoying a family ski trip to Utah again this year. It’s been wonderful to catch up with everyone. Family is the best.

Check out our 2018 family Christmas card. We love how it turned out. I designed and handcrafted around 80 cards / envelopes. I thought I’d share a little bit of the process and how the card came to be.

Every year I design a card and have it printed, but the last couple of years I’ve wanted to incorporate handmade elements into it.

This card came together in five phases and was assembled over a 2 week period.

Library pocket card

Library pocket card

1. Concept and prototype: Typically I start with a family photo. This year we did not take a group family photo and so I was a little perplexed where to start. We tried to snap a picture at Thanksgiving but it wasn’t the best. Instead I figured we could choose a few photos to collage. Then I started to think about how to organize the information to accompany the photos. After a few prototypes I came up with a layout that I liked inspired by a library card.

2. Design: After I knew how the card prototypes would work I set to create the computer designed elements. I laid out the card front (I cheated and used a pattern I found from Creative Market). I changed the colors to coordinate with the Stampin’ Up! Colors I wanted to use (Tranquil Tide, Bermuda Bay, Calypso Coral and Petal Pink). Second I designed the library card and added the years most memorable highlights. I searched through our various phone photo libraries to find decent companion photos for the back side. Then I designed the card back with all of the photos and dates. I set all of these all up to print 5x7. The library card was set up two cards to a 5x7 card. I planned to trim to size later.

3. Printing: I had the cards printed at COSTCO. It’s a super affordable option and you recieve envelopes as well. I chose front and back four color printing on an uncoated heavy paper stock. The printing is pretty color accurate and turns out great. Bonus for me … I had a 50$ voucher that covered almost all of the printing. Good deal. The cards were printed and delivered in just under a week.

4. Assembly: While I waited for the printed components to arrive I started to produce the handmade components. I die cut the word ‘Holidays"‘ from Tranquil Tide cardstock. I knew the library pocket would be the perfect place to incorporate a little bit of hand stamping. I cut and scored vanilla card stock that once folded could be adhered to the card front. Before I assembled the pocket I did all of the stamping using the Stamparatus (stamp alignment tool). I stamped and heat embossed the sentiments with gold emboss powder. The swirls and leaves are stamped in Petal Pink. I did all this x 80.

5. Addressing: The envelopes came with our address pre printed. I wanted to dress the up a little bit with stamping. The front side was also hand stamped with elements from the ‘Merry Christmas to All’ stamp set.

If you are interested, I have a few video stories of the card assembly on my instagram @i.heart.stamps

When I showed the card to Ben (our 16 year old) he didn’t get it. He never had to manually check out a book using a card and pocket. So this card is for the old fogies. LOL. Wishing you a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR! Charlet

Geared Up (vinyl birthday card) - Global Design Project Sketch Challenge - GDP170

December 24, 2018

Hello! We have a SKETCH challenge for this round of the Global Design Project. Since it’s the holiday season (this time of year can be so busy), this challenge will last for two weeks. Hopefully you can find a minute to craft with us.

I wanted to create a very specific birthday card for my brother who is a fan of vinyl records. This sketch worked out perfectly! The stamp set is called Geared Up and is available Jan 5th in the Stampin Up! Occasions catalog. The set is full of car images but I used the verse and the texture pieces for this card. The record player was created using various circle punches and the Classic Garage Designer Series papers. The needle for the record player was hand cut from a silver foil sheet.

Check out the Global Design Project blog to see what the other designers have created for this challenge and play along with us! FYI - I made him a record card last year. You can see that version here if you are interested. Happy stamping. #gdp170 Thanks for stopping by. Hope your holidays and birthdays are MERRY!

Hung with Care Notecards - Charlet Mallett

Hello friends! Christmas is almost here. Do you have all your gifting complete? I’m finishing up a few little neighbor gifts and stocking stuffers. The timing of this TGIF Challenge couldn't be better.

I have three tips for you to finish up your gift packaging.

  1. Simple stamping. Stampin’ Up! has challenged us demonstrators to create projects that show how easy it is to create a beautiful project using stamps, ink and paper. This is their theme for 2019. Follow the hashtag #simplestamping for more ideas. I created a few simple notecard and envelope sets using the Hung with Care stamp set. The images in this set are perfect to stamp in one color or mix is up using Stampin’ Write Markers.

  2. CASE! Copy and share everything. This time of year why try to reinvent the wheel. If you come across something cute in the stamping world, case away. Be sure to credit the original artist and you are good to go. These fun tags will go on popcorn buckets for neighbors. The original design was created by fellow TGIF designer Bree Renwick (@craftsomnia). Thanks for the great idea Bree!

  3. KISS - Keep it simple stupid. Stupid is such a rude word but the KISS sentiment holds true. Use what you have on hand, pull your scraps together, don’t overthink and really just keep it simple. These fun bottle brush tree tags were so easy and SIMPLE!

Frosted Floral - Stampin' Up! Artisan Blog Hop

December 20, 2018
Artisan Logo.jpg

Hello friends! Welcome to the December Stampin’ Up! Artisan Design hop. This month the team is featuring the Frosted Floral product suite. This suite of product includes so many goodies. I choose to feature the First Frost bundle (stamp set and dies), Frosted Floral Designer Series papers, Iridescent Boxwood Wreaths and the Tranquil Tide Velvet ribbon. Velvet ribbon = YUM. A full list of supplies can be found at the end of this post.

First Frost new year card, Wishing You the Best - Charlet Mallett, Stampin’ Up!

Let’s chat about a couple of details on this ‘Wishing You the Best’ card. Did you notice the flower stamp images are a little pink and purple? First, I stamped the images in Rich Razzleberry and then used a Blushing Bride Stampin’ Write marker to selectively color in a few of the lighter areas. So easy. I like the look of this and I think it adds depth to those flowers.

The dies that coordinate with the First Frost stamp set are super versatile. I use label shapes on my projects all the time and was excited to see layering labels in this bundle. I opted to use those two dies a little differently than intended. I cut the large label first from Whisper White card stock. Next I cut out the smaller label from the inside of the larger label, creating a delicate little window. Then I lined the window with vellum. I love how you can see bits of the stamped flowers behind and in front of the window label.

The window on this card opens to the inside (it’s not lined with anything). First die cut the window, then emboss. ICYMI - I use the Pinewood Planks Dynamic Textured Embossing folder all the time. It appears on every 4th or 5th project I create. When it’s good, it GOOD! So, no surprise, I’ve used it here again. I love the look of wood texture and find it makes a nice subtle card base.

The window opening is embellished and decorated with products from this suite. The ‘Congratulations’ sentiment and a piece of the boxwood wreath float in the label window opening.

Fun stuff.

Thank You.jpg

Ah, how can 2018 be coming to a close already? What a year! I’m wishing you all the best. Thank you for all the LOVE, encouragement, and friendship. I’ve sure grown on this Artisan journey. It’s been a true joy and blessing to create for Stampin’ Up! … I’m not done. While the title is handed over to a new crew, I’ll still be stamping, crafting and creating just as much as ever. I’m permanently infected with the paper crafting bug.

DRUMROLL and CONGRATULATIONS … Are you as excited as I am to welcome the 2019 Artisan design team to the Artisan family!? These gals are an amazing crew of crafters, each with their own unique style and dedication to the craft. I’m certain you will be inspired by them this next year. Give a big HELLO and congratulations to the new crew (links below). Also, a round of high fives to the three returning 2018 members (Emma, Lauren, & Sylwia).
